Clay Oven Bread at Enfin Farms

Waiting in line tends to bring out the worst in people, and in Cape May in August, waiting in line is a nearly unavoidable consequence of almost any activity you choose. Somehow, though, waiting in line for Elizabeth Degener’s bread at Enfin Farms is not so bad. In case you haven’t heard, Elizabeth sells bread just outside the gate of her family’s farm along Sunset Boulevard – it’s the little white stand on the right as you head towards Sunset Beach. It’s currently open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, starting at 10am. Elizabeth bakes crusty, bursting-with-flavor clay oven-baked bread, with flavors like oatmeal molasses, rosemary thyme, and olive oil black pepper. You can plan a meal around this bread, or it can be a meal on its own – toast it for breakfast, dip it in olive oil or smear it with butter, serve with a salad and it’s dinner. And it’s usually gone by 11, so go get in line. You’ll be glad you did.
